BLACKKKLANSMAN REVIEW

September 19, 2018

With racial and political tensions rising in the United States once again subjects like the ones covered in Spike Lee’s Blackkklansman are not easy.  When I first saw the trailer for this movie I was intrigued at the absolutely absurd premise which made me very excited for the film.  I did have one fear and that was that the whole movie would be one cited and spend the entire movie saying white people are bad and make everyone who is not white a hero.  To my enjoyment that wasn’t the case as Spike Lee has crafted a clever, funny, and well acted story that shows the problems with radicalization on both sides of the spectrum.  Before I go any further I have not read the book by the real Ron Stallworth so I’am not sure how much of this story is true to the real life events.

In the starring role we have John David Washington as Detective Ron Stallworth, Topher Grace as KKK Grandmaster David Duke, Adam Driver as Detective Flip Zimmerman, and Laura Harrier as Patrice Dumas.  All of the actors listed do a great job especially John David Washington as he portrays a man trying to do the right thing and break the racial barriers put in front of him at the time.

There were many things that I thoroughly enjoyed throughout this movie, from the performances, the cinematography, to the great soundtrack that I already have saved on my Spotify playlist.  The story told in the movie handles the sensitive topics that it is dealing with very well. Without giving too much away there is a scene towards the end where the radical right is chanting “White Power!” and the radical left is chanting “Black Power!” and to me it showed how well Spike Lee handled these topics as he shows the radicalization on both sides and how neither one is a good thing.

Overall I absolutely loved Blackkklansman and have to say that it is one of the best movies I have seen so far this year.  It is a true classic in the making and I’m hoping to buy it on Blue-Ray as soon as it comes out.  It’s a great story that provides great discussion points related to problems that are happening in our society today and that is why I have to give Blackkklansman a to see because it’s a just a great movie.
