BEN AFFLECK TO EXIT THE ROLE OF BATMAN (AGAIN)

Things are shaking up in the DC Extended Universe as well as Warner Brothers Studios for better or worse as news broke this past week that Ben Affleck will not be reprising his role as Batman in the much anticipated solo film titled “The Batman” directed by Matt Reeves.

The DCEU has not been sitting well with many hardcore comic book fans as well as casual moviegoers since it’s rocky start with “Man of Steel” in 2013. It has been constantly criticized for being too dark and overall not doing these beloved characters justice, no pun intended.

However there is one thing that most fans, casual to hardcore, seem to agree on, Ben Affleck is an awesome Batman. Like Henry Cavill, fans liked Ben Affleck's portrayal of the character despite the mediocre story surrounding them. Ben Affleck's portrayal of Batman was one of the highlights of the messy and lackluster “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and made fans excited to see what they will be doing with this seasoned and more world-weary Batman.

Fans started to feel uneasy however when Ben Affleck stepped down as director of the upcoming film “The Batman” which was supposed to be his solo movie. Then speculation started to pour out that he may be stepping down as Batman entirely. This rumor was enforced even more when “Justice League” was a box office failure which has led to huge behind the scene changes over at Warner Brothers. Rumors then started to circulate that Jake Gyllenhaal was going to be taking over the role but those rumors quickly went away when it was announced that he would be taking on the role of Mysterio in the upcoming “Spider-man: Homecoming” sequel. Now it seems we have finally have confirmation that Ben Affleck will not be reprising his role as Batman in the upcoming movie sadly.

Many fans are asking what does this mean for the future of the DCEU? It’s obvious that they are trying to take things in a new direction as it has just been announced that comic book writer Geoff Johns has taken on a writing position over at Warner Bros. Fans have been hoping for a long time now that Geoff Johns can do for the DCEU what Kevin Feige has done for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nevertheless, we are still left with many questions. It seems that Warner Bros might be giving up on their shared universe in favor of something else. Either way, fans are growing tired of waiting to see their favorite characters all together on the big screen done right. I personally say that they should just finish the movies they have already started, take a few years off and start over again with new writers as well as having DC Comics more heavily involved in the making of their movies.
